People I Know Episode 8: Just Carla
Why do we do it?
Late nights, early mornings, showing up early and leaving late, sacrificing time and precious energy for the sake of accomplishing a goal. Many of us find ourselves looking at the reflection in the mirror and having this conversation repeatedly.
And then there are those of us who just do it. Not to achieve any particular end, but because that’s just who they are. They don’t need pep-talks, they don’t need extra incentives, and they don’t need acknowledgments or trophies.
Carla Erskine happens to be one of those people.
Born of immigrant parents, she grew up as a member of the Jamaican national tennis squad, before immigrating to Florida, where she eventually took her talents to Villanova, eventually ditching her racquet for a stack of law books. She now spends her time working in land use, and winning fitness competitions. When she isn’t working diligently at a legal firm and lifting weights, you can find her out making a difference with Purposeful Citizen, a non-profit she recently founded. That being said, if you bring up any of this to her, she won’t think much of it. Carla isn’t big on compliments, and isn’t particularly susceptible to flattery. She does what she does because of who she is, and that’s where the beauty is. At the end of the day, she’ll probably say she’s “Just Carla”.
I hope you enjoy watching as much as we enjoyed filming.
